Grandma had hutches and hatboxes. I need a safe location for my electronic stuff. No, I’m not comfortable sending the carefully-pruned fruits of my imagination to someone’s cyber barn where they can be co-mingled, examined and possibly eaten. Backup and disaster recovery are important, but I want them home.
I’m in favor of burning DVD’s; I do it all the time. But it’s easy to work for days without backup. Backup is one of those “when I get around to it” (Have you ever seen a round tuit? They’re kind of rare. Some folks have never seen them at all.) things. OK, bad joke, moving on…I need safe storage. I need up-to-date, continuous, storage. Recently, a wildfire started a few miles from our place (it’s an early fire season, but the weather’s weird). Then firefighters came by the house. We didn’t talk about saving documents, we talked about cutting trees in the back yard, but it’s clear I may need to quickly grab stuff one day. I won’t have time to burn a DVD, and I’d likely be too nervous to do it correctly anyway. Enter a cute blue box from Zonet (www.zonetusa.com), a SATA hard disk drive, and NTI Backup Now 5 (BUN5) (https://secure.ntius.com/backup_now.asp). With help from Brian, and a careful reading of the instructions, I now have continuous backup of my documents. I have something I can grab, unplug, and even fit in my purse (a rather large purse), or one of my backpacks. This is all external. There’s no need to crack the computer case. Be a little careful, though. Initially, I set the Zonet box on top of the light scribe. The light scribe case is slightly rounded, hard and slippery, and as the hard disk drive whirled, the blue box tried to whirl also. It was cute, but I was afraid it’d start break dancing (literally). I tucked the box snugly against some sturdy components, and it hasn’t complained. I can save electronic pictures and even XBOX 360 and PS3 games externally (not that I have either of those). It’ll work for both PC and Mac users. But the best thing; it saves my documents continuously. And I can grab it and run.
